Association & Consortium Management Overview
Since the early 1970s, SOCMA has been the focal point of action for more than 50 affiliated trade associations, professional societies and educational foundations, including a variety of chemical, special issue and testing consortia (i.e. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Section 4, High Production Volume Consortia (HPV), etc.). Association Management Services (AMS), a division of SOCMA, manages various separately funded, affiliated associations and consortia that address specific chemical or process advocacy, regulatory, testing, stewardship, or technical issues of common concern or interest to a particular sector of the chemical industry. (i.e. chemical-specific or class of related chemicals or applications). The experience, history and flexibility of AMS is the perfect fit for the ever-changing demands of the chemical industry.

As affiliates, these groups benefit from the collective SOCMA staff resources, management and expertise. Each group is managed independently with its own membership, budget and governance.
Helmes began his professional career at SRI International where he was Director of Biological and Environmental Chemistry. He then spent a year at the National Cancer Institute as manager for preclinical cancer chemoprevention before joining SOCMA.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Duke University and doctorate in chemistry from Emory University before accepting a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Wisconsin’s McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research.
