Final 2016 Roundtable Rescheduled for June 22 in Houston
Representatives from SOCMA member companies gathered in Philadelphia last week for the ChemStewards® Regional Roundtables to share best practices, discuss current environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) trends, receive updates on ChemStewards issues, and provide insight on plant operations, key performance indicators, managing near-miss programs and third-party audits, among other issues.
Kirsten Dolan, a certified ChemStewards Auditor with WSP, discussed ChemStewards trends and how to improve your systems from an auditor's perspective. She told attendees that auditors look for improvement in all environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) areas. Dolan also asked attendees how their facilities are implementing the plan, do check and act process to lead continuous improvement. "Excellence comes from the top down," Dolan said. "The ChemStewards management system must have support of top management, which creates employee buy-in." And finally, she stressed that employees must be accountable for following EHS&S procedures, and she encouraged attendees to reward employee suggestions that lead to improvement.
R.J. Wolcik, EHS Manager with Strem Chemicals, Inc., shared insight into how his company prepares for the ChemStewards Performance Improvement Awards, as well as how the company promotes the ChemStewards program within its facility.
SOCMA members also heard from Richard Sarnie with AIChE's Center for Chemical Process Safety regarding the Vision 20/20 program. Sarnie told attendees they should weave process safety into all of their systems and use significant incidents, or near misses, as an opportunity to encourage and embed learning.
BASF's Michael Stadelmaier shared insight about his company's audit system with potential contract manufacturers and best practices to use when participating in one of these audits.
Scott Berger of AcuTech Consulting Group discussed process safety metrics and how they can be measured, and SOCMA's Dr. Holland Jordan shared helpful tips on how to utilize the ChemStewards Management Portal for charts and graphs, among other things.
The day concluded with a discussion on operational excellence with SOCMA President and CEO leading the conversation.
SOCMA members in the Cleveland, OH, area met Wednesday at McGean for round three of the Regional Roundtables. More information and photos from that meeting will be included in the next e-Newsletter.
