ChemStewards® is an environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) management system designed to help chemical facilities optimize their performance, save money and enhance its role as a good corporate citizen.

Developed by the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA) in 2005, this excellent management tool has been adopted by more than 170 chemical facilities throughout North America. ChemStewards has now been modified to bring the same continuous improvement criteria for university laboratories.

SOCMA commissioned Antea Group to conduct a study of university laboratories to determine the scope of their EHS&S systems and what the needs of this group entailed. The key findings of this study were that many colleges and universities have integrated EHS systems, but they are home-grown and inefficient. A safe workplace is paramount for these institutions, but other factors important to the institution are compliance to state and federal regulations and efficiency. Two common complaints were the labs were spending too much time on paperwork and not enough time on research/teaching and the constant turnover of personnel hindered training. ChemStewards for Labs is an excellent antidote for these issues.

The ChemStewards management system is based on a continuous improvement cycle that builds upon a Plan - Do - Check - Act approach. This customizable system, verified by a third-party, is designed to fit members' performance levels.
