March Luncheon Speaker and Topic Announced

“Dispelling Myths of Pharma R&D”

John L. LaMattina, PhD
(Retired) Senior Vice President, Pfizer, Inc.
And President, Pfizer Global Research & Development

It’s easy to hate Big Pharma. After all, life-saving medications are expensive. You could argue that Big Pharma’s incentive to generate income is antithetical to the needs of society. But no reasonable person could argue against the industry’s accomplishments. The pharmaceutical industry has cured many infectious diseases and some cancers, delayed the onset of heart disease, enables AIDS patients to live long and productive lives, controlled the progression of arthritis, and reduced pain.

Any thoughtful discussion on the pharmaceutical industry must be guided by the facts. Dr. John L. LaMattina, a thirty-year veteran and former president of Pfizer Global R&D, will discuss the realities and the myths surrounding the pharmaceutical industry offering concrete, illustrative examples. Facts, rather than innuendo, will be offered to explain the costs, toils, and the successes as well as disappointments in pharmaceutical R&D.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Over the course of a 30-year career with Pfizer, Dr. LaMattina established himself as one of the pharmaceutical industry’s outstanding worldwide leaders of research and development overseeing 12,000 employees in the United States, Europe and Asia.  In particular he played an important role in growing Pfizer’s pipeline in oncology and guiding its investments in biologics and vaccines.

Dr. LaMattina graduated cum laude from Boston College with a B.S. in Chemistry, received a Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire in Organic Chemistry, and then was a National Institute of Health Post Doctorate Fellow at Princeton University.  Dr. LaMattina is the author of numerous scientific publications and U.S. patents and serves on the Board of Trustees of Boston College and Worcester Institute and as a director of the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation.  He also serves as a Director at Neurogen Corporation and Human Genome Sciences, Inc.
