In case you missed SOCMA’s 5th Annual Member/Guest Golf Tournament, there was a huge development in the event.  This year, for the first time, it did not rain! Participants in the tournament enjoyed a beautiful fall day.  No one had to reach for their umbrellas as they vied for bragging rights of winning first or second place, longest drive and closest to the pin, as well as the various prizes donated by the events sponsors.

The tournament was open to all levels of players at the Manufacturers’ Golf and Country Club which has twice been named among “America’s 100 Best Classical Courses.”   The golf course stretches out from the club, rolling over 250 acres.  The impeccably maintained green fairways and the stone colonial mansion make Manufacturers’ one of the most celebrated golf courses in the greater Philadelphia area.

Following the tournament, players joined together for some pre-dinner networking in the Club during the cocktail reception hosted by John Cox of Charkit Chemical Corporation.  Dinner, sponsored by Chemspec Events, included an awards ceremony recognizing winning players.

A great deal of time and effort went into this year’s Member/Guest Golf Tournament, and SOCMA couldn’t have done it without the help of its devoted members.  Ben Jones of C&EN provided perfect arrangement for the day and the use of his course.  Jones is a member of the Manufacturers’ Golf & Country Club and shared his membership with us for the Tournament.  John Cox of Charkit donated a great deal of time to serve as Chairman of the planning team, selecting gifts and prizes and hosting the awards ceremony.  Thanks also go to Steve Diprose of Chemspec Events for sponsoring dinner and all his involvement with the event.

Many companies also helped make the event possible.  Evonik sponsored Hole 1.  FMC Lithium sponsored the longest drive and Hole 18.  Attendee gift donations were made by Syrgis and Charkit Chemical Corporation.  Other prizes raffled off included:

  • 2 hybrid golf clubs
  • 4 Peerless wedges
  • 2 boxes of Titleist Pro golf balls
  • One G2 putter
  • Foursome at Manufacturer’s Golf & Country Club

A donation of $3000 will be made to ACS’s Scholars’ Program from this year’s tournament.  Following tradition, the check will be presented to ACS’s Executive Director at SOCMA’s 87th Annual Dinner, being held December 8 at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square in New York City.

SOCMA thanks all of its sponsors of this event.
